Then you're on the right track. Can't go wrong with RRS.

The L plate will attach to the head with nothing else.

The only thing you might need is a spacer to allow the use of a remote shutter release while the camera is attached in vertical orientation. Somebody more familiar with RRS can confirm that.

You only need to loosen the set screw and move the bracket to the left by 5mm. It's set up to do that, to be more compact when not in use.

Thanks everyone. I wasn't sure if I would need anything else or not.
What kind of spacer do I need for the remote shutter or do I need one?

I'm pretty sure the RRS L plates won't work on gripped bodies.

There are models for both gripped and ungripped cameras.

Jay covered it. You don't need a spacer, you just need to position the L plate correctly on the body.

Sometimes it takes a while for them to be designed and put into production. Seems like I couldn't get an L-plate for the gripped 7D for 4 or 5 months after it was released.

One more question. Has anyone or is any one using a
Black rapid strap with the L plate? How well does it work any
Pros and cons to using it with the L plate?

L plates have a 1/4 threaded hole that replicates the tripod hole on the bottom of the camera. You can place the BR screw into the L plate hole. However, you won't be able to use the L plate in landscape (horizontal) orientation with the BR screw in the bottom of the plate. The portrait side of the L plate is still available for clamping, and you could flip the ball head over so that you can use the portrait side of the plate in landscape orientation.

When using a shutter release attachment in portrait orientation I just offset the L plate in the clamp, leaving enough the camera hanging over the end of the clamp to expose the socket, I'm not using a grip.
