I'd heard on some forums that it was a bit slushy at the top of Sutton Bank (the area the event was held) but I certainly wasn't expecting what it was like once I got up there.

This was the track that formed the spectator parking for the College Moor and Wass stages:

It's hard enough parking on these forest roads in the dry (tight roads and barely any verge to park on) but with the snow it was a nightmare. I got stuck five times, four of which I managed to rock the car free but the fifth time I dropped the front left over a small drop (just before the cars in the above photo, the ditch on the left is deeper than it looks) and then made it worse trying to get free as the back end started to slide around towards the drop off. Fortunately there were still plenty of people around at this point and two lads pushed me back up onto the road. Numerous other people seemed to be having a similar experience and there were a few traffic issues with people who'd turned around already coming back up the track to park and meeting people who were coming in the opposite direction.

I eventually got parked up somewhere that seemed alright - though when I came back to the car at lunch I had to rock it free again, then I moved into a better spot that someone else had vacated after the first run of stages. It took around forty minutes of trying different places so I ended up being around fifteen minutes late for the start of SS3 College Moor 1.
I was planning to go to the service area at lunch but I didn't want to have to get parked all over again for SS8 Wass 2 so I just hung around instead.

The upside of the weather was that it didn't snow or rain during the day so I didn't need to use a rain sleeve for the first time in a long time.

Anyway, the photos.

You need to get there early! I was first car into the car park, drove in turned and parked up no bother near the entrance LOL.

#2 is an absolute cracker. Really like that one!

Simon.

I quite like #4, with the slightly off-centre stance, suggesting getting set up for a coner and therefore a committed driver (unless I'm totally wrong and he's flooring it after a corner).

Nice background story too.

My first event of the year wont be untill mid April - looking forward to trying out the new camera (comp safari).

Lawrence

Cheers guys.

I got held up by ten minutes or so getting out of the house and I think that put me the wrong side of the time everyone else decided to get there. I was in a big convoy of cars going up Sutton Bank and nearly all of them turned into the parking track.
I'm going to get to my next event much earlier and walk much further away from everyone else. The spectators in #5 and the marshals in #7 turned up just before the first car did.

#4 is actually on a straight a decent distance from the previous square right but a few of the cars ended up riding the ditch on the outside of it and then snaking down the straight and out of sight because of how slippery it was. One car lost it just as it went out of view and had to retire.

#2 is actually closer to the corner than #1, #3 and #4 but he'd straightened out much quicker.

Unfortunately, getting there early isn't always the answer. This car park was actually one of the better ones. I've seen the parking tracks on some rallies (eg Border Counties, Malcolm Wilson) rougher than the stages themselves. An absolute nightmare in a standard road car.

Haha, I'm planning on going to both of those and my car is rather low, with rather firm suspension (both as standard) and it has an air dam hanging off the underside that lots of people complain about losing when they go over speedbumps (though I'm yet to have a problem with it).
Something to look forward to I guess.

It was mainly the snow and the busyness that caused problems for me I think, all the spots where you could see the ground through the snow were taken and the snow made anywhere with even a slight banking or gradient impossible to park on. Or rather impossible to manoeuvre or drive away from.
Without the snow there would have been around twice as much parking as ended up being used and no potential for getting stuck unless you did something extremely silly.
