I have checked the manual and 2 other books on the 7 D .
When I look thru the view finder , the battery just shows 2 marks from bottom . Is there a way to make it show the real condition of battery ? My XTI shows 3 bars - full charge down to one bar - maybe one or 2 shots left .
I do have a grip on it . All three batteries read the same in view finder when in grip - one at a time . [2 canon batteries and a off brand .]
If I go to the menu screen and go to tools , it shows the batteries are at 100 % .

Then the display in your viewfinder is broken. It normally shows the same thing as the top LCD does, i.e. four blobs inside the battery outline when the battery is considered full. Or full enough, perhaps I should say.

The depiction of that symbol in the rear display also shows the same thing, althoug individually for the batteries in the grip, so there could be a discrepancy if they are at very different levels.

Thanks
I can not get the rear to display it . The top does display correctly . The view finder just shows a mark at the second hash mark for battery .

The battery outline in the viewfinder has an interruption by the second mark. That's where the conductors for the internal marks are passing through the outline symbol.

If you go to the top of the third yellow menu, you can select to see battery information.
Or you can press INFO until you see the shooting information (provided you have that enabled), and there's yet another copy of the battery icon.

Worry when the battery icons start blinking <10% charge.

Thanks , I was hoping it would show up on the screen like on the XTI when turned on .
I do sweat the battery being low .
Is there any way to make the 7D do it too - display when turned on ?

It does. It's on the top display even when the camera has gone to sleep.
