I really want a 30mm 1.4 to go on my T1i. I think it would be used for most of my shots (baby, family get togethers, nature, landscape etc. I also want a really good telephoto. I can get a used 70-200 f4 IS locally in excellent condition and the Sigma 1.4 new for the price of the Canon 35mm F1.4 L. The Sigma seems to have all sorts of issues and I don't want to have to go through that, but saving that 1k and buying the 70-200 would be nice.

I sold off a few lenses so all I have is the 18-55mm kit lens and 430 ex ii flash.
Help suggestions? Thank you

Sigma 30+70-200mm f/4 IS. Two absolutely incredible lenses.

No need to spend the extra money on the 35L if you're shooting crop, UNLESS you need a red ring on your lens to feel complete.

What's the idea behind that? I'm not sure I completely understand.

On a side note I talked to a camera store today and he said the Sigma will not show much of a difference in photos compared to my kit lens but the canon will.

He's right in a sense, the lens will not make the photographer... If you suck, your pics will still suck.

The Sigma can do drastically different things than the kit lens can do. Obviously you need an understanding of some basic principles of photography and how to apply them, but that's some pretty weak advice from a camera store employee IMO.....

Having owned all three lenses before (still have 35L), I would opt for the Sig 30 and the 70-200 f/4 IS in your situation.

The Sig 30 is a great performer on a crop camera, I loved it when I had my 7D. The 70-200 f/4 IS is super sharp, provided that you have decent light, it'll produce very sharp pictures.

Most people use the 35L on a FF, where it REALLY shines. It definitely trumps the Sig 30, but for your application, having two really good lenses is a more versatile and practical option IMO.

If you have ANY further plans down the road to go FF, he's right. ;)

If you plan to stay on crop, the two lenses combo will serve you just fine.

If and when someone goes FF, they can just sell their crop lens and buy ones that are FF compatible. For the immediate needs, the Siggy will do a fabulous job.
