Good stuff, Jeff!

Crows are very worthy subjects, and not at all easy to expose for, due to the fact that their plumage is black, but also highly reflective, depending on the angle they are at relative to the light source.

Personally, I would much rather have a truly good photo of a crow than a truly good photo of a Bald Eagle.

When a flying Eagle starts to fly closer and closer yet towards me, I don't get very excited at all, and am usually content to just look at the Eagle fly by without trying for a photo. . But when a flying Crow starts to fly closer and closer, I get a little excited about the photo opportunity that may present itself, and quickly adjust my settings and pre-focus, so as to be ready ..... but I know that you and I differ in that regard.

"Fare" and "fair" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one. The proper expression is "moot point", NOT "mute point".

Here's a shot I just took two hours ago.

He was perched on the cattail that you see on the right side of the frame, and I hoped to capture him as he alit from the cattail.

I wanted to change the aperture from f8 to f11, to get more depth of field and increase sharpness as he flew out of the pre-focused distance, but I didn't have time, as he took to the air just as I was about to reach my finger over to the aperture knob. . Oh, well ..... the feather detail isn't as sharply resolved as I would prefer, but it's still "good enough" to enjoy.

It isn't cropped at all; this is the full image ..... that's why the bird is off-center the opposite way to what we usually see, flying out of the frame instead of into it. . Shooting wider, and then cropping, does allow one to have more control over the composition, but I feel that filling the frame in the first place often results in a bit more of a dramatic look. . Each method has its advantages, as well as its disadvantages.

I think it is just that every day I go out I see crows and more crows. I do shoot them once in a while and yes they are a challange, in the Navy we had the challenge taking pictures of mixed groups of people at award ceremonies, when you had several races in the same picture you had to really work to get them all exposed right, this was with 2 1/4 or 4x5 in the good old days, today just use HDR.

But I have seen and photographed 4 eagles in my life all in the last 2 months. The pond where I go in the morning had two of them but I have been back for hours everyday for the last 3 weeks and not seen a single eagle, but crows.... they are everywhere, even worse are the grackles they come in hoards to strip my feeders clean! I do get shots of them when I can. I don't look down on crows they are just so common.
