Good photo, interestingly Tony Northrup used to recommend a second hand 7D and 400mm f5.6 as a good combination for birds!
Although I think your recommendation is probably based on a lot more experience with the 7D.

The 7D MkI was rushed to market in order to try and get ahead of the curve in performance APS-C bodies against Nikon's approaching options. So, it was "good", but a bit of a pig to actually use; very finicky around proper exposure, needing higher than usual shutter speeds to support handheld shooting, etc. It's AF system was starting to be more advanced, but was also a little more of a "beta" state at release. Once the 7D MkII rolled out, it was really the camera that the MkI was 'sold' as being. At the time Tony had his hands on it, combined with the 400 prime it was pretty much the fastest combo Canon had on deck in APS-C and therefore good for birders. There were actually much better options in the 1Ds bodies, but those were much more pricey and used APS-H sensors, better AF systems and way more customization. I still own 2 MkI bodies as backups to my MkII, "just in case". They're also my "toss in" bodies if I go on an outing where there's a high likelyhood of damage or loss and the shots I'm likely to take aren't "critical" to me. Or as handoffs to someone that wants to try out a dSLR.
