What type of bird is that in the first two photos? It's beautiful. :-)

I will let Steve chime in but it is a swallowtail kite, I've been seeing them all around here for the past month but I'm always driving in my car when they fly over!!!!

Thanks folks! Yes, John is right it was taken with the Canon EF 500mm f/4L IS.

Mike, do you mind me asking what type of tripod/head do you use? If your shots are all handheld, you must not be a coffee drinker...
:)

John

Thank you Melissa. Yes, Swallow-tailed Kite. Every summer they gather in huge numbers about 4 hours from my home. Quite a few Mississippi Kites as well. On most mornings between 9 and 11 am, about 50 to 100(on a good year more) of them soar over a single grass field gorging on large insects. It's part of their migration process, preparing for their trip south. They nest nearby and once their young are fledged they feed with them for about a month before flying south through Florida and then down to South America to avoid the North American winter. Even at my home I'll see a few of them in the summer but never as close as when they gather to fuel up.

John

This shot was actually hand held and no I'm not a coffee drinker.

Although, I do use a monopod with a RRS MH-01 head a lot for photographing Osprey and have been very happy with it over the years it is difficult for me to get full dive shots without going handheld.
