It's interesting to me not only to shoot birds but to watch some of the things that they do. More often than not, one guy will get some grub and the others all try to take it away. That's what I thought was going to happen here with the second guy chasing the first.

But....not the case. Bird two caught up with and whizzed right past the guy with the prize.

Shows you what I know.....

Love these. Are they the same as the bateleur eagle? I saw some bateleurs in South Africa back in 2000 but wasn’t into bird photography then.

I don't think you have any choice but to expose for the white Jack. Burnt whites kill the image for most people. Loons are exactly the same problem. Black blacks and super whites make them very difficult. Using spot metering will only make things worse as everything is bobbing around, you'll be on and off the bird constantly. I use Partial metering.. increase my aperture to cut some of the light and shoot dark lifting the blacks in post. If you don't already use the paint brush... get to learning it. you can do a ton with it in specific area's of your image leaving the other parts alone. Water will always play with your image depending on sky colour.. sometimes for the better.

That's really helpful, Jeff. Thanks very much indeed for the advice. I'll give that a try. And, yep, I'll investigate the paintbrush.

Picture editing is OK. CC always welcome.

Well done shot of that red-tailed hawk. Nice pose, detail, and color.

Thanks Mike. Mid day sun and overcast. Really tough but I did manage a couple keepers!
