Loons are exactly the same problem. Black blacks and super whites make them very difficult. Using spot metering will only make things worse as everything is bobbing around, you'll be on and off the bird constantly. I use Partial metering.. increase my aperture to cut some of the light and shoot dark lifting the blacks in post. If you don't already use the paint brush... get to learning it. you can do a ton with it in specific area's of your image leaving the other parts alone. Water will always play with your image depending on sky colour.. sometimes for the better. That's really helpful, Jeff. Thanks very much indeed for the advice. I'll give that a try.
