Wasn't sure where to post this question but because it involved a bird in flight, I thought I would try here.
Please move to a more appropriate section of the forum if required.
I'm fairly new to bird in flight photography and I've had this happen a few times and I'm wondering what the explanation is for it and how to avoid it if possible.
In the first picture you can see that one of the active auto focus points is directly on the head and nothing is in focus and yet in the second picture, none of the focus points are on the bird and the bird is much more in focus.
Why is nothing in focus in picture one and why is the bird in focus in picture two?
These two pictures are part of a series of pictures taken of the same bird at the same "time".
Picture one is the start of the series and picture two is 8 shots into the series.
These two pictures are snips of the original pictures.
I used the Windows snipping tool feature because I wanted to show the active focus points.

I have both my cameras set to focus priority over release in all cases. I really don't understand, and hopefully one the more knowledgeable photographers here will be able to explain this. Sorry I can't be of any help to you.
