Eye level with the vultures after some climbing in the Spanish Pyrenees. Impressive birds!

Beautiful photo, well captured.
I'd only known Vultures from photos of scrawny, red headed, bald necked, absolutely ugly creatures.
This seems at odds with my impressions.

Crappy shot but maybe worth it for the expression on the hawk's face. The hawk is getting pecked by a woodpecker.

EDIT: I've been told this is actually an Eastern Kingbird attacking a Swainson's Hawk. The kingbird has a red patch on its crown that is normally concealed but shows when it is excited.

Wonderful action. Always intrigues me how such small birds (by comparison) get stuck into much larger ones, and why they don't get taken for a snack.
You might be disappointed by the quality, but the actions and expression speaks volumes. Thanks for sharing.

Oh man, Peter...this is such a cool looking shot. Judging from this image, I'd say the climb was well worth it.

Truly an outstanding action shot, Ken. Apparently they can put on a good fight.

Very engrossing shot Archibald. Out here in California, I've see our western kingbirds attack larger buteo hawks on several occasions. These little birds are rabid defenders of their nests, and aren't afraid to take on any intruders. I'm going to post one or two of my shots soon, in which a pair of kingbirds are attacking a Swainson's hawk...and another shot of a single kingbird also attacking a Swainson's hawk. I marvel at their courage and tenacity.

Incredibly wonderful shots, Lee. They are so sharp and 3-dimensional looking.

Yep, those kingbirds are tyrannical. :) I've seen redwing blackbirds pursue raptors too. You can call it courage, but I see it more as part of the life and death struggle out there. The smaller birds are defending their nests, or doing deterrence after the hawk has devoured their eggs or young.

Great shot, Mike! It looks familiar, did you post it before in another thread?
