Crappie fishing, by the best in the business.

Mike that is beautiful. Another great shot of birds doing their stuff.
(I had to look up Crappie. Here it means just that, and I didn't think your photo deserved such a derogatory title) All the wiser now I know it's the name of a fish. :-)

Roseate Spoonbill

Magnificent. Must be rather impressive to see them wafting their large bodies across the landscape.
Lovely colourful image.

Ah, osprey with fish shots as promised, very nice, Mike! Do you also have the osprey lifting fish out of water shots? That would have been awsome!

Richard, you really made me laugh with your remark about the crappie. I'm still laughing, and making tons of typing errors.   Thank you very much for your very kind words. Your compliment is very rewarding.

Shalu...I didn't even come close to getting the osprey lifting the fish from the water. The osprey captured it in a dark shadowed part of the pond with dense trees in the background. Not only that, but he was just too fast for me. It surely would have been nice to have made that shot. Hopefully I'll get it in the future.

That is still on my todo list as well. I had three near misses with the shot. First time was at Manzanita lake at Lassen, the osprey got a fish not far from me, but my camera wan not ready yet. I was only able to get couple of butt shots when it was leaving with fish. Second time I went to a park when it opened in the morning, and as soon as I went to the lake, I saw an osprey flying away with TWO fish and it promptly dropped one of them. I was only able to get some distant butt shots. Third time, the osprey dived right in front of me, I was really excited and had my camera ready, but it emerged without any fish! Oh well, one day I will get it.

It's sooo frustrating to miss shots like that. Seeing how well you shoot, you'll get yours long before I get mine:!:

(I had to look up Crappie. Here it means just that, and I didn't think your photo deserved such a derogatory title) All the wiser now I know it's the name of a fish. :-)

Don't worry about being confused by the name of that fish. In the southeast it was not commonly known as a crappie years ago. Only now with people reading about them on the Internet are they commonly called crappie here. In my part of the state (Mississippi) they were known as white perch. Bad thing about that, there is also a type of bass that is named white perch, so in other parts of the country a white perch is a white perch, but here what we call white perch are actually crappie. -?

And then if you go farther south in Mississippi and westward into Louisiana they are known as sac-au-lait. So if you are in the wrong area of the country, two people can be taking about catching the same type of fish and because of the different regional common names for the fish, the two people can easily fail to realize they were taking about the same type of fish. Or more confusing two people could be talking about white perch and it is possible neither one may realize that one may be talking about one type of fish and the other person talking about another.

Thanks Philip.
Yes we have that problem here too.
Applies to birds and to trees also.
But not knowing anything about fish called that, I was thinking Mike was getting round the spelling police and putting 'ie' in place of a 'y'. In other words being polite. That is a completely different meaning!
Now that's probably permissible, but not knowing the American genre I was a bit wary.
Our daughter once took her 2 kids to a park in USA and saw a particular animal we don't get here and exclaimed to them about all the big Beavers.
She didn't know why all the women were staring at her in disapproving ways. well soon found out!
I expect someone will work that out.
First I'd have known about that and I would probably have eagerly and excitedly joined in the conversation.

Now where were - Ah Birds in flight. Best get off here else I'll be in flight :p

To add to the confusion of the name, would you believe that species of fish is considered the very best tasting freshwater fish by many people in the United States. It is one the most popular sports fish this country. Many other fish are popular because of their fighting ability. This includes bass, trout, muskie, etc.

The crappie is popular mainly for its taste and for the quality of its meat. So the favorite tasting fish by many, is called crappie.
