Sigma 400 f/5.6 (no longer in production) beats the Canon 400 f/5.6 at f/5.6, basically ties at f/8, and loses beyond that.

15mm F2.8 fisheye better than the Canon 15mm F2.8 fisheye at all apertures, and the smaller MFD is also great.

If you are talking about Sigma 400mm f/5.6 APO for Canon AF Per PhotoZone lens performance summaries, this is the result (based on 5 stars):

Performance wide open * (poor)
Performance stopped down ** (ok)
Distortions *** (significant)
Vignetting *** (significant)
Flare * (heavy)
AF speed * (very slow)
Build quality ** (not so good)
Optical verdict 1.6 (poor)

No.

Sigma AF 400mm f/5.6 HSM APO macro

Photozone rates it 3.5/5 optical, 4/5 mechanical.

Edit: I think the one rated highly has a longer ugly grip with lines on it, kind of weird finish. The one ur thinking of has a shorter more crinkly cross-hatch kinda thing in the middle. God that made no sense, sorry. :)

Is this the one you're talking about?

If it is I may go for it (if the price is right!) even though it'll only work at f/5.6.

+1 and it beats the canon at non-macro distances

Sigma 30 doesn't even come close to these two on FF ;) .

All the reviews of the Sigma 30 1.4 that I have read show it to be extremely sharp in the center, but not at the corners of the frame. There, the Canon 35f1.4 and the Canon 35f2 are both better.
All the reviews I have seen have the Sigma 30f1.4 better, meaning sharper, than the Canon 28f1.8.
My copy of the Canon 35f2 is consistent with the review at SLR gear.com.
