I'm new to bird photography, but luckily a nearby lake has some willing subjects....

There are some amazing photos in this section, so any C&C from those that know what they are doing is very appreciated.

Rainbow Lorikeets - their colouration is unbelievable!

And an unknown Raptor - would love an ID please. It was hunting dragonflys over the lake.

Great set of shots! Those Lorikeets sure are beautiful. Your unknown raptor looks like a Peregrine Falcon.

Beautiful shots, I agree with Brad's ID on that last one...Peregrine Falcon.

Thank you, much appreciated :D I did think peregrine, but I'm used to birds panicking like mad in the UK when they see a peregrine (moved here a few months back), but none of the birds at the lake reacted to the falcon.....they must know it's happy with the plentiful fat dragonflies

Nice, yes it looks like a Peregrine, but no, it is the little falcon , also known as the Australian Hobby http://www.raptor.org.au/flongipennis.html (external link) That explains why none of the other birds were afraid, and why it was eating dragonflies! : )

Thanks, Tom the Peregrineflier ;) Lyle Washington

Ok, thanks Tom :) I may be back there tomorrow morning, so if it's around again I'll try to get a better pic, also get more of an idea of its size. I've not seen a hobby before, but it seemed bigger than a uk kestrel ?
