I usually can usually tell from the pupils but thiis one looks like it was natural light, it looks like the reflection in his pupils is a window, i really dont think it is, i have a feeling he used a beauty dish or soft box up high and then a light either side of him for some subtle lighting either side of the face. As for the pupils, maybe he was shooting with a window in front of Kanye as a bit of ambient and then used the pupil reflection and added them in post? what do ya'll think?

I think you said it, beauty dish straight on slight angled from above. Then two narrow side softboxes, see temple areas, making sure the side lights are narrow enough not to spill into the corner of eyes.

It's a really good shot.

I will add that the soft focus on the tie and shirt looks like it was done in post.

I can see skin texture on his temples... a neck tie would be on that same plane.

The shirt and color are totally blurred in post.

Keep in mind that some photographers now edit catchlights to conceal the type of lighting used and prevent people from reverse engineering how it was done.

You can often get clues by finding a photographer's recent work that contains EXIF information. It's usually not hard to find. You might even find some behind the scenes of his photoshoots on youtube. Many of the very busy photographers are consistent in their setups. Once they find something that works they stick with it.

I think you said it with natural light and maybe a beauty dish. The catchlights in the eye look like it was definitely taken outside, but I don't know about the soft boxes on the side since his cheekbones still look relatively dark.

As for the PP blurring I don't think it was PP. If you look at the tip of the nose it's slightly blurred and the edges of the face, which make me think there was a pretty shallow DOF used for this image.

I'm not pro at PP, so I could definitely be wrong on the lighting since there could be a heavy amount of switching around, but those are my 2 cents...
