I actually had to make sure it wasn't April 1st when reading this. I still don't see why the sheriff felt the need to make an 'example' of her.

On the face of it, I've a lot of sympathy for the woman but it's unwise to take pictures of airports and other sensitive installations. I also wonder why she was carrying that amount of cash to pay school fees. Aren't there such things as cheques, credit / debit cards and direct debits in the US?

I'm not surprised at what happens in a country like the U.S.

Yes this is overboard, but I would hope that most people know not to take pictures of airports.

Wow.. Assuming the behavior of that police office is accurate, he should be the one going to jail.

I just got back from a trip, taking photos of airports all along the way. Why would I not take a photo of an airport?

I can only look at this issue from an outsiders perspective (since I'm not living in the US), but such a thing would be unthinkable here. Airports are some of the most popular photo-locations. The same counts for big train stations etc.

I'm supposed to be doing an East Coast photographic trip in April with my son. After reading this I may decide to stay in the UK.

If one percent of that "lawyer blog" is true, I'll be surprised. Just count the number of inflammatory words, written by someone who wasn't even there. My BS detector buried the needle in the red zone.

Most people know they have a Constitutional right to take pictures of airports. Can you show me where this right has been taken away? If this story is even close to being true, the law enforcement people are going to end up wishing they had offered to stop traffic to let her cross the road to take the photos.

I too had to make sure that this was not some April fools joke. It sounds way over the top. Even if 1/2 of the claims in the story is true, Nancy is going to come out of this a very rich lady. and the folks of Suffolk County are going to be paying for a long time.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

I wouldn't go that far.. I've taken tons of photos inside airports recently, and was only spoken to once about it, and politely at that. It was my fault, I was shooting with my 70-200 zoomed in on something, and off the my left in the background was the main security checkpoint.. I didn't even notice it, but I can very easily see how it looked like I was taking photos of security with the big honkin' lens. Discussion went like this..

Security Person : "Sir, can I ask you what you're taking photos of?"

Me : "Airport.. people.. that pizza stand over there.."

Security Person : "OK, but can you do that away from security, the guys over there get really antsy when they see cameras being used near checkpoints".

Me : "Wow, I didn't even see security over there. Good point, I'll head off in another direction."

There was another case with a guy filming an airport, and he got arrested and his equipment confiscated. I think it was Mocek or something.

Here we go, straight from the TSA (US) website..

TSA does not prohibit the public, passengers or press from photographing, videotaping or filming at security checkpoints, as long as the screening process is not interfered with or slowed down. We do ask you to not film or take pictures of the monitors. While the TSA does not prohibit photographs at screening locations, local laws, state statutes, or local ordinances might.

Taking photographs may also prompt airport police or a TSA official to ask what your purpose is. It is recommended that you use the Talk To TSA program on tsa.gov to contact the Customer Support Manager at the airport to determine its specific policy. Or, if you are a member of the press, you should contact the TSA Office of Public Affairs.

http://www.tsa.gov …avel/taking_pictures.shtm (external link)

Personally I don't think anyone has much business taking photos of security at an airport. I understand technically you're allowed to, but really.. there's not much of aesthetic value or interest there unless you're doing a story or piece on lines/security/etc.. Just because you can do something doesn't mean you should try and exercise that right at every available opportunity.. have a bit of sensitivity to these people and their jobs as well.

As far as the original article though, assuming it's true, that police officer has mental issues and he needs to be removed from duty.

I'm thinking the same way, something is fishy in that story.
