I was wondering what everyone's opinion would be on only offering b&w proofs for the net, with the proof watermark in the center.

Here is why I am asking.

My workflow is to move the pictures from the memory card to HD1 *takes half an hour, usb2*, move the original jpgs to folder named original jpgs. Color correct the cr2 files which takes about an hour for 180 pictures *average amount I get from an hour portrait session*, I like to go file to file to tweak the color of each set of pictures to make them look their best. Especially with outdoor shots, I find the color changes every few minutes.

Then I run the batch conversion and save all the files as jpgs reduced to 1500x2250 pixels *almost 5x7* size which takes upto a few hours *they are originally 18mp*. I normally do this part over night so it does not take away from my productive time.

Then I take the files, crop them so they look their best and slap on my watermark, merge and reduce the size for the internet.

At some point I copy the pictures to HD2 and DVD/Bluray. Sometimes right away, sometimes after the color correction and crop. It all depends how fast I need to erase the memory card.

If I were to skip the first part, and work with the original jpg's and convert them to black and white so the color didnt matter, this would save me a bit of time. I would still loose an hour having photoshop do a batch resize of the jpgs for me so I can load 40 of them at a time into photoshop to crop, but it would save me a couple hours probably.

As an added bonus, people would less likely be happy enough to save the proofs, and they may be encouraged to buy more to get the color version.

What is everyone's opinion on only offering b&w proofs?

I realize another solution is to get some usb 3.0 hard drives and get a top of the line desktop, but thats not in the budget atm.

You are assuming that black and white is less desirable than color and that is not always the case.

most around here prefer color, and it wont really be b&w, itll be desaturated. but it may be harder to sell custom b&w conversions if all the proofs are b&w. I may just do th b&w for events like this karate test. different lights in the dojo have different temperatures, so its a real pain to try to color correct. And there is no guarantee they will be purchased.

For family pics I may keep doing what I am doing, with the color proofs.

Oh, the answer to this question may save me a bit of time.

When I open the original jpgs from the camera in photoshop, do what ever I do them and have it resave as a jpg in the batch, it always asks me for the two confirms, forget what the first one is, and the 2nd one is the level 10. Which is very annoying, it means I can not leave the computer.

If I do those actions and save it as a tiff, theres no popups. then I can save those tiffs in another batch action as jpg and it doesnt do those two popups. It doesnt take to long to do this 2nd one because the files are already resized but still, thats a bit of time I could be saving. Well it doesnt ask anything if the tiff doesnt have layers, if there are layers, then it asks a qauestion and I have to save them as a psd, then there is no question asked.

Does anyone know why photoshop does this? CS1 in case it matters.

Yeah, I can see where it would make sense for things like sports where the potential buyer just needs to see what moment you caught. I was thinking of portraits and that's an area where B&W might be preferred.
