I am curious what flash modifying equipment you like and why? Gary Fong does not seem very good or will work for me. There are of course many others out there.

I use the Sto-Fen diffusers simply because the Gary Fong stuff "appears" to be made to extract the most money for the least amount of raw materials used. The Sto-Fens might be made from recycled milk jugs but they fit snugly and are suitably substantial in construction for my needs and uses. Most flash units have integral diffusion lens but they still put a hot spot on the subject. For every Sto-Fen supporter there are supporters for every other diffuser/modifier out there, make your own decisions.None are fiendishly expensive if you can't choose a clear winner.

Depends on your definition of a flash modifier. I use everything from $3 stofen knock off to a 50 inch apallo.

however I also have 30 inch and 60 inch umbrellas. Micro apallo. 36 X 48 softbox. And once I used a 70 inch octo with a speedlight.

I dont classify anything as a flash modifier or not. I use what gets the job done.

Lots of threads on this.

It can get quite heated! This is a good one that seems to cover most points of view ;) https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=986948

I'm a big fan of the Lumiquest stuff, specificly their FXtra gel holder and the Quik-Bounce.

Some cameras, some lenses, plenty of gaffer's tape and beer.

I like Lumiquest as well. I've got the Softbox III, which strobist and also McNally were very enthusiastic about, and also the new Lumiquest Softbox LTp, which is about twice the surface area. Both attach easily and rapidly with velcro, and both do a very good job if they are positioned close to the subject for a head or head and shoulders portrait. If you want to cover a larger area from a greater distance, you need a larger, more expensive softbox. You can see Lumiquest at:

Thanks for the tip Hugh. I just ordered one of the Softbox III's through their website. It will come in handy for my off camera 580 EX II / Radio Popper.

Index card an' a rubber band.

I made a homemade beauty dish too, still getting the hang of using it. Haven't had a good opportunity to practice with it since I made it.

These days, my budget is close to zero, so I gotta make do with what I can.

I have a few things I use - favorites are Cheetah Qbox's (24 and 16), cheap card flags and nearby walls, when I'm outdoors, I use a Lumiquest pocket bounce

I was talking to someone today who makes his own bubble wrap diffusers and loves the look!
