What's a Decent non-16:9 Monitor?

So my secondary monitor has crapped out on me. Some sort of power issue. I'm after a monitor around 19-22" that is NOT in the 16:9 format. For my secondary I'd prefer a monitor closer to the 4:3 aspect ratio.

My 2209WA will remain my primary colour-correcting display, so the secondary won't need to be super accurate.. however I don't want it to be crappy as it will act as a video reference monitor for editing (not CC).
I don't want to spend more than £200 ideally.
Any ideas? I don't want to go for just anything 'cause I've come across some really nasty cheaper monitors... but I know some can be good.

Cheers!

Yep. You and everyone else want one. *sigh*. Now, here's the truth. Won't be what you want to hear, sorry:

1. You can find (current) LCD displays around 20" with a 4:3 aspect ratio. Unfortunately, you won't want to purchase them. Trust me. They are not made for use as computer monitors. If you search deep enough you'll find them...they are mostly low rez displays used for video monitoring. :(
Here's an example: http://www.totalbarcode.com …umber/20RTC.html?src=TBAM (external link) Oh, you can find some high rez ones, but they are SUPER expensive and made for pro video crap. Sigh.

2. Look for older 16:10 displays. Unfortunate because most of the ones you will find are crappy TN panels. TN really has came a long ways.... :\ I suggest not doing this.

3. If you MUST have 4:3 ratio on an LCD: Find a used 17" PVA panel. I have three of these taken from HP photo kiosks from d..err..a drug store that does photo that we service, ahem. PSU in them dies and they are soooo easy to fix, even my horrible soldering skills suffices, lol. You can find decent 17" panels for super cheap (<$50...or perhaps free...talk to local places that go through that stuff). They make great second monitors for web surfing, that's what I use mine for.

4. If you MUST have 4:3 but are more open to options: find a used CRT. You're in the UK so I dunno what it's like there, but over here you can find 21" *nice* crt monitors for <$20 from surplus stores, state surplus, hospitals, etc... Still...heavy and take a lot of desk space. I gave the ones I had away, sigh. Miss that 23" trinitron... :(

5. Give in and buy a cheap 21 or 22 or 23" LCD that has a swivel and use it in portrait mode. I'd suggest this option. Wait for a special and buy two of them if you must.

Your question ("where can I find a good 4:3 monitor") is asked over and over again on computer forums all over. Don't fret, it's a *good* question. Just with a sad answer. :( Even 16:10 displays are becoming super hard to find. :(((((( Trust me if anyone came out with a new 4:3 monitor in a 23-27" size for <$500 that was decent, they would be out of stock in minutes. :((( Sorry for long reply, just 16:9 computer monitors are pet peave of mine--but what can you do when nothing else is made anymore. :(

Well thankyou for your reply! I agree it's irritating that it's almost completely 16:9 now. Especially as most content consumers view on their PC isn't widescreen.

Although I've seen a couple monitors I'd be interested in... they're not 4:3 but they'd match the 2209WA resolution pretty well. For example:

Have you ever thought of repairing your monitor? Depending on what it did, it could be a $5-9 fix depending if you have access to the right equipment.

I would, but the monitor sucks, plus it's already got some marks on the panel that are getting worse so it's time to get a replacement anyway really.
I'm thinking of just going for another 22". I'm looking at a used Apple LCD actually.. were those G4 models IPS?

Are you ruling out 16:10 as well?

The Apple Studio Display is an IPS (at least mine is, not sure all are)
Be aware some have an ADC instead of DVI connector. So you'd need an (expensive & hard to find) adapter.

The ones I'm looking at come with VGA adapters so they seem okay. I'm looking at anything now really, so long as it's good value (new or used)

HP LP2065. My previous IPS monitor. I have nothing bad to say about it other than I wanted a larger one.

I actually went ahead and got a Dell 2007FP. It supposed to be a decent IPS and its the aspect ratio I'm after. I could probably use this to colour-correct with instead of the 2209WA

Holy crap! You paid THAT much for a 20" monitor?

And I realize this was one of the Dell panel lottery models, but where did you see IPS in the specs?

Nah I paid £130 for a refurb :p

I read a couple places that most of them are IPS, but some can be MVA. Not sure what that is?

Price sounds fair! You can generally tell if the panel is an P/MVA or an IPS by viewing an image at an extreme angle. The MVA screen will quickly look a dark purplish color. As far as color accuracy, the two types are about equal.

Sony G500 CRT if one can stand the space it takes up.

I realize you already bought a nice LCD, so the reply is moot, but I had another thought. Would a modern wide aspect ratio monitor work if rotated 90* to portrait orientation?

I'm a dinosaur and rely on my tried and true (and vastly huge and energy inefficient) CRT monitors, but I've given LCDs a lot of thought knowing they will someday be in my future. I use dual display (currently a wide screen 16:10 FW900 24" CRT, and a G500 21" 4:3) but when I go LCD I will use two 16:9 with one rotated 90%

Yep... Pretty much standard stuff.
