I don't know how to describe it precisely, but basically I want to mount a larg softbox with AB1600 on a boom arm in such a way that I can EASILY swirl the softbox (facing down, facing the subject in an angle). Obviously without any hardware the softbox is going to face down due to the gravity of the softbox. I can use some L shape rod to make the softbox forward facing and use the grip on the strobe head to change directions. However I find the operation not very smooth and the controling the precision is not so great. I am looking for some grip head kind hardware to make it easier.

What suggestions do you have? Thanks in advance.

p.s. I have a Manfrotto 085BS as well as a traditional cheappy boom system.

You need a boom which has controls on the end which can be rotated to adjust the light fixture.

i think Bobby is referring to the manfrotto super boom

but since you already have a boom, maybe this is a simple solution for you

Unless I am mistaken the drop down pin will keep the modifier pointed one way only, isn't it? With remote crank you can position it which ever way you want like pointing straight towards camera, or pointing down (like drop down pin would do) or pointing back and so on.

I'm sure the last thing you want is another boom but, for future reference, there's also this option:

I....

should get one of those....

Spinning the light at the end of a boom is such a pain when its high up, would save alot of time.

thanks all for the replies.
just watched this youtube video, how did he mount the light on the boom? when I rotate my boom arm like that the light keeps facing downward, I can't find way to lock the strobe head.

I have that boom and it's massive. The end allows you to mount the stud in one of two positions and coupled with the ability to adjust the end it's quite the handy feature.

A swivel pin, like the F830 (external link), will do what you are looking to do. It's similar to a drop down pin, but also allows locking the strobe at an angle.

Every time I see the subject of this thread I think of a swirling lightbox on a boom, almost out of control.

Ok, carry on.
