thanks much for the info on the canon. My reason question was for CountryBoy who just said "Buy the Tamron".
Like I said, I do like it, but just want to know why you do.
so far leaning in favor of canon.
Thanks for your opinions!

the tamron is a bit more money...but offers things like a non rotating front element, FTM, and a faster focusing system, FF compatability, 50mm more reach...i'm guessing I.Q. is probably close enough on both to be a wash....so if those other perks are worth the money to you...go for the tamron...if not save your money with the canon

250mm x 1.6 crop = 400mm

300mm x 1.6 crop = 480mm

Owned both, IQ, build, AF speed goes to the Tamron but of course, it does cost more.

I've never owned or experienced any Tamron lenses so I can't speak for them. However, I have owned the 55-250 before and I must admit, that lens if amazing! Especially for its price too! Its light and equipped with 3-4 stops of IS. I didn't own it for long since most of my shots were indoors, but outdoors, this baby will shine!

55-250IS is a great lens for <$200. Tamron 70-300VC has a quite a few improvement over 55-250IS though. AF is quiet and fast. Faster AF will help for wild-life and sports. Tamron also has longer warranty (6 vs. 1 yr in the US) Tamron also includes a hood as well.

For intro to telephoto, a used 55-250IS is great on the budget. For an extra $200, Tamron will get you quite a bit more. If you can afford it, get it. It will keep you happy longer and more time to save for those big telephotos.

I replaced my 70-200mm f4 non-is with the tammy. I was planning on upgrading to the canon 70-200mm f4 IS, but I was curious about the tammy. I am pretty happy with it so far. The colors aren't as nice and sharp as the canon, but only when I am comparing pics side by side at 100%. For me, the awesome VC and extra reach was worth the loss in sharpness and color.
Another plus of the tammy over the 55-250mm is that you can use the tammy on a full frame.
However, for wildlife you need more reach.

300mm x 1.6 crop = 480mm

So it's a 20% increase in both cases - i.e. the same improvement.
