Loading problem

For some time now I have been having a problem loading shots from cards on to my laptop. While loading on to windows I get the error message 'The file or directory is corrupted or unreadable'. If I click 'Try again' the shot always loads up. This will happen, sometimes, to up to 30% of the shots being loaded and, as you can imagine, is a pain in the butt.
I have two card readers and have used 4 different cards, but still get the problem. Any ideas? Oh, and I'm not particularly computer minded

Have you tried plugging the card reader into a different port?

Thanks for the reply Tony. I have tried the two ports adjacent to each other on the right side of the laptop (a Dell Inspiron), but get the same result. Next time I'll try the port on the left hand side.

What camera are you shooting with? Do you have another you could try?

And, what software are you using to download the files, and what file format are you shooting?

Cameras are Xti, 7D and two different point and shoots that I use for work.
I used to delete after loading up shots but was then told to format the cards instead. The problem seemed to begin then.
I just load using windows and all the shots are jpegs.

Format each card only in the camera it will be used in.

Ray, does this happen with all your cameras no matter what card you're using? And, what software are you using to download the pictures?

Yes it does. When I put the card in the reader I get a box come up on the screen asking what I want to do, see below.

Well, I don't know about the Windows Export thing up on top there. You might try some of the other options -- for the Canon cameras you could try ZoomBrowser and see how that goes.

I've used other software for a long time for card downloading, so don't know the ups and downs of all the various Windows options. It's possible that the Windows stuff you are using has a glitch.

Of course, there are a lot of people who happily use EOS Utilities directly with the camera to download, although I myself have stuck with card readers over the years.

I tend to agree about the possibility of a windows glitch. I'm sure that I'll find a fix around the problem eventually.
