I need one of these:

About the only info I can find are people seeking the bracket on the actual flashgun, and mine is fine. I'm actually not sure how I dented my shoe.

It looks to me that the Canon ones are universal across models (whereas Olympus has four screws, so they're not universal brackets).

I'm thinking this part should only be a couple of bucks, not 18 freaking dollars (external link). I'm tempted to pick up something along the lines of this (external link). I don't actually need the spring portion, and not being able to see the screw placement scares me a bit (not too much--it's only $3).

The 550 comes with a silver bracket, and I don't really care what color it is, but black would be sweet (neither color is worth $18).

Any ideas?

I would be careful with the one from the pc to hotshoe bracket you linked to. I have a feeling it is not as sturdy as you would want on your camera. But ofr that price, it might be worth trying - you could try it 6 times before it makes the other option look better!

My suggestion would be to look for an old EOS in the thrift stores or on-line. You just need one that has a hot shoe, it doesn't need to work otherwise. Might get lucky anf find one for a couple dollars. If you get it from a thrift shop, you can check to make sure it'll work on yours.

If you want a fast solution that you can be sure will work as it is intended to - spend the $18 and get the Canon part.

I would just throw the whole camera away then, if $18.00 is outragous to pay for the correct part.

I hear ya, Shane. But maybe it isn't about not wanting the correct part. Instead I think the point is that $18 seems high for what the part is. If one can find the correct part for less, that would be the ideal solution.

There is a reason why the Canon part probably costs more than the shoe brackets used on other stull. The OP may decide to go that way after he see what is available for less.

If you don't have the "spring portion" set up correctly, the camera will not be able to sense that a flash is mounted and I suspect it will not let the flash fire or comminicate with the camera.

Exactly what he says, there's a small pin under that hotshoe spring that together with it operates an internal microswitch. Without the spring the pin will fall off, with the consequences that he mentioned.

I was thinking that the OP meant he didn't need the spring part because that was not damaged on his camera and he could use the one he has. He only said the shoe was dented.

But when I just looked at the picture in the first post, I gotta say... it doesn't look so dented that it isn't usable. Is this just to fix a cosmetic dent? If so, I think you should be careful trying to use a shoe from some other source, it won't look original.

I was expecting an email notification of replies, apparently that's not the default here ;)

Exactly. The spring piece--and to make sure I'm conveying that correcty, by spring piece I mean the piece that slides in to the shoe pictured above--is fine. I don't care about the mauled look on the spring, but it's dented in a way that makes it tough to slide the gun on and off. Do-able, but tough.

Exactly. If I can buy trackpoint caps for $0.99 on eBay (external link), the same logic stands that I can get this sort of part for a couple of bucks. Not necessarily under a buck (hell, even plastic PCMCIA inserts go for $6+ on eBay...). Or maybe I'm just cheap.

Was just hoping someone knew of a vendor that I didn't find in my Googling.

I figured Canon would gouge me. If I had listened to the repair guy they would have charged me $100 to replace the entire top 25% of the camera (basically everything above the EOS sticker). But getting forwarded to the parts guy:
Shoe: $3.17
Spring: $1.47
Shipping: $6.00
Tax: $0.99
Total: $11.63

Parts prices are right on target and the shipping is what I'd expect from Canon. Apparently the spring is back ordered and won't be in until Friday, but much like Amazon, Canon Parts will ship as they're available and only charge me for shipping once. My spring is pretty much fine, but for that price a brand new one can't hurt.
They also sell the screws should you need a replacement.

Hope this post can be of help to someone else in the future!

Cool - persistance pays off. Since you already took the old one off, you know exactly how it goes back on. Don't you love it when a plan comes together?
