Just rented a 70-200 2.8 IS II for a wedding and it was nice. It limited me during the reception, but I would like to buy something like a 24-70 2.8 (example) or something as sharp as the 70-200 2.8 to walk around the reception with. Thanks in advance.

Why not the Canon 24-70? It's a great lens if you get a good copy. For zoom wedding shooters, the 24-70mm + 70-200mm is a benchmark.

btw sorry for butchering the title everyone. I seen some work from the 24-70 2.8 and It seem like the iq were what and what. I could be wrong.

Your thread title asks about primes, but I think what you're saying here is you'd like a better zoom than your Tammy.

I think what you just experienced is 70-200 is too long for a reception.

When shooting weddings, the only time I have that FL mounted is the wedding kiss.

24-70 + 70-200 2.8 IS is a very widely used combination. Workhorses for most pros as far as I know. Alternatively, you could just add a longer prime like a 85 or 135mm. The key to all of it is two bodies though, so you could keep the 28-75 on one.

It's one of the most popular wedding zooms for a reason. I had it and it never disappointed.

Have you considered a nice EF prime ?

Possibly the 35L F1.4 used within your budget?

It will be tough to find a walkaround zoom in your desired FL range for your FF with the IQ of the 70-200L f2.8 MKII you rented with at least a constant f2.8 plus IS & USM unless im braindead today again !

Regards, ;)

85L are sharper than the 70-200 II from f/1.2~f/2.0 while the 135L is sharper at f/2.0 than 70-200 II. :D but from f/2.8 and up the 70-200 II are the same if not better than those two primes in the center, but smokes them in the corner. but for wedding I think 24L/35L along with 85L will do nicely, lots of people use this combo from what i heard. Or you can get the 35L, 85 1.8 and 135L.

Thanks everyone. I enjoyed using my tamron 28-75 2.8. The funny thing is I ordered a 40D and it came in, but it was broken on the shipment to me. So I had to use one body :( goodthing I had a backup shooter. Also before the wedding I did pictures of the bride/bridesmaids getting dressed and the 70-200 didn't come work that good :( So I guess the 24-70 2.8 it is. Another question why do people say the tamron is better then the L? Is the canon 24-105 F4 even a option?

I don't know how sharp the 70-200mk2 is, but the 85L, 100L, and the 135L are all super super sharp lenses. Especially the 100L.

What's wrong with your Tamron? You enjoy shooting with it and it covers the focal length you need at a quarter of the cost of the 24-70L. My Tamron 28-75 is fantastic, every bit as sharp as my L glass.

Depends on your style, I once photographed an entire wedding with a 200 f/2L IS (well, about 95% of shots at 200mm)

If 70-200 too long for your style, try a 24-105 or 24-70 or something

I doubt you'll do better, in terms of IQ, than the Tamron you have. If that worked for you, look for a prime or 2.

I bought a crop body recently to add to my FF, thinking it would add more variety to my lenses. Actually it looks like it will do the exact opposite, ending up with lots of overlaps, or the same, depending which lens gets put on which body. No point putting the 135 on the FF and 85 on the crop, for example. Also means I will actually have to think when shooting (which lens on which body do I switch). I don't get back into serious shooting for a couple of months but I think I'll be replacing the crop with another FF, sensor confusion being just one reason.

Bohdan - I may be, and probably am, completely wrong.
