for those of you that are not familiar with a CU focus grid i recommend you watch this video first before scrolling down to the examples

this is a unique eggcrate, as it doesn't just control the spread of light it effectively focuses the light in a direction

all the cells in the grid are pointed toward the center block off cells effectively funneling the light out the center of the grid

for these next 3 images the subject is measured at F/5.6 at each distance from the grid

the Cu grid is 45* to the subject at camera left and i'm shooting straight on

It's a challenge to completely describe the light distribution changes created with even a normal grid on a large diffused source and more so with what we are calling a CU Focus (with cells that are cone shaped!) However, understanding how these two different blocking tools control light from large sources offers a really important lighting basis for photographers. Although I have been making egg crates for almost fifteen years, I am still learning the implications of using them for light control. Here is a link for a page on our still in-development web site that attempts to describe the nature of a cone shaped egg crate. (we hope go live in a few weeks)

thanks for your input Stephen, this focus grid sure is different in the way it controls light compared to a normal egg crate

the link you provided gave me some good info and the diagrams helped too :D
