Just when I thought I was starting to understand things......not!
Today I opened an image in DPP editor. Before I did any adjustments I changed the view to before/after comparison. Lo and behold, when the two images came up they were not identical. The supposed before image looked more realistic, truer color and contrast but the after picture looked over-exposed. Huh?? I did no edits prior to changing the view to before/after. Should the two views not look identical at this point?

I my self don't have a clue -- when I open the Before/After the two look the same to me.

Before/After is used to show you the changes while you're editing. Not after the changes are saved. And we're talking about raw images here?

Yes, we are talking about raw images.
As per your first sentence, that is precisely why I opened the Before/After view. I was going to edit the image and view the changes as they happened. But I did no edits, nothing, nada before opening the Before/After view so as far as I understand it the two images should have looked exactly the same on opening. But they don't. And Tony said his two images do look the same. I tried it again with two other photos and the same thing happened. And I also looked at the images from the side, upside down thinking maybe it had something to do with their position on the monitor but the differences between the before and after remained constant.
Is DPP applying some changes in the background I don't know about before I even touch the photo? Is there something I should be looking for in Preferences?
Thanks,
Diane

:o:o:o When I changed the Before/After view from up/down to left/right, they do now look the same so obviously it has something to do with the monitor angle. Sorry for bothering you guys.

I use DPP. Every time I open a photo DPP majes Strength 7, Fineness 5, and Threshold 2 in UnSharp Mask. I did not set these. DPP came that way. Does yours automatically make those adjustments? Does any one know how to set them to 0? Should I leave the settings alone? DPP does this to every RAW photo, from portrait to landscape. Is this normal for DPP?

DPP uses your camera settings as its defaults. If you want DPP to default to 0 (Strength), set sharpness in your camera to 0.

Yup, zilch.
No, I'm just on my Macbook - please don't lecture me, the Dell 2410 arrives tomorrow.

Well Diane, that angle of view thingy can make a big difference on laptops and other monitors that haven't been engineered to have a wider angle of view. That's something I look at with monitors.

Yeah, I'm feeling kinda dopey about not figuring that out before posting.
