# of starburst = # of aperture blades?

when looking at long exposure shots (where the aperture is stopped down fairly much), does the number of starbursts in distant lightings indicate the number of blades used in the lens?

I thought so too because I was seeing a lot of 8 bursts on my 50mm 1.4 which is the number of blades, but I've also seen some 10 bursts, so it can't be just that.

Yes you are right. I assume the burst are from the corners of the openning.

I believe if a lens has even number of blades, the number of starbursts equals the number of blades, but if a lens has odd number of blades, then the number of starbursts is double the number of blades.

i've heard that too..my tamron has 7 blades and it makes really nice stars
