Did some searching but didn't find any answers. Sorry if this has been covered before, my search didn't turn up what I was looking for specifically.

I have a 430exii and recent got a 430exi as a second flash. Can I use the mark 2 as a master unit to control the mark 1 as a slave?

Nope To master you need a 5 series ex flash or an ST-e2

Thanks for the replies. Not sure what to do then. Should I look into another rf-602 receiver then?

That would be the easiest and cheapest. ETTL for off camera work is somewhat overrated in a lot of ways anyway. I have 4 speelights and an st-e2 and I use radio triggers more often than not.

If you want to retain E-TTL, I would get a Yongnuo ST-E2 (search on here, or google it). $120.

Or go manual/radio with RF-602.

Right on. Sounds good, thanks all.

I'd love a 580exii but it's not in the cards, or my wallet right now.

I thought using mini/flex you can make 430exII as master. Not a cheaper way though.

PW Flex/Mini is the master - doesn't need a gun at all. Should control any E-TTL compatible slaves (fitted to PW receivers) as remotes.

Unlike Radio Poppers, which need to pick up control signals from a master flash gun. Potential extra cost there, if you don't want to use that gun as part of the lighting.

I meant this option.

Force TTL Master Mode: Enables the use of a 430EX or 430EX II in the shoe of a ControlTL transmitter as a master to trigger remote flashes. The transmitter tells the camera that <MASTER> mode is active even though that mode is not available or set in the flash. This also benefits the 580EX Set the 580EX in the shoe to normal mode (<MASTER>=OFF) and enable Force TTL Master Mode. This will make the 580EX in the shoe not emit communication flashes. This reduces the “flickering pre-flash” that bothers some subjects.

A yongnuo st-e2 will work with full ettl if you do not want to spend to much, it is about 110 dollar on ebay and it works well.

I have a YongNuo ST-E2 and it works good, except I cannot get FEB mode to work with my Canon 450D. Any suggestions?

Before you go out and spend a pile of money buying a bunch of stuff to to make your 50D shoot wireless, consider a simple $300 option.

Sell your 50D for $600 and buy a used 60D for $900. You will get wireless flash and HD video. Not bad for $300.

It is line of sight. Indoors the light tends to bounce all around and it works quite well even if there is no direct line of sight. Outdoors you will need line of sight and the range can sometimes be limiting.
