Thanks to Seattle1 for posting refraction shots in the show your setup thread, now I have something else to shoot obsessively. Here's my first attempts, gotta practice more of course...

Here ya go...

Refractions Setup

Pretty easy to setup, but getting the water to be perfect drops is a pain in the neck.

excellent! I was driving down the highway in the rain this morning and looked to my right to change lanes and thought "hey, now there's my setup right there on my window!".

If you check the link I posted it shows the setup that Seattle1 had. It's basically a piece of glass over your subject, and then you spray water drops onto the glass. I used LiveView at 10X to focus and focused on the refraction of the subject and not on the water drops or the subject itself. I put my flash on a wireless trigger and a tripod and aimed it down towards the subject so when the light hit it the "picture" bounced into the water drops.

I would imagine you could do it without a flash, but you'd have to probably use good light and a slower shutter speed. To get the water to "bead" you can use Rain-X or something similar on the glass. Makes the water bead up pretty good, otherwise you're gonna get all kinds of funky shapes in the water, and the refractions are going to look goofy too.

Give me a few minutes and I can show my setup.

Which is why you shouldn't use candy, it's too tempting.

I initially didn't have any Rain-X so I had to try what was available. I grabbed the Febreeze accidentally thinking it was the Pledge, and oddly enough the Febreeze worked better than the Pledge. Car wax didn't work, so I stuck with the Febreeze until I could go out and get some Rain-X.
