Quick visual calibration

Hi,

I just got samsung 2494lw since my x2gen monitor died. This was an emergency purchase, since I have programing work to complete. I didn't really focus the purchase for photography as much as "I need a monitor now", and this was about the best one at the store without going off and doing weeks of research. I've always had great performance from samsung monitors

On my old monitor, I used some visual calibration tools and was able to match my screen output to prints from mpix - actually with very little work. With the samsung 2494lw, I can't seem to get anything right. There are visual tests like: Make the black dots inside the grey circles disappear. Well, I can't turn things down enough to complete the procedures. I have to turn everything completely to zero, and it's still not enough.

I'm ready to buy a spyder, but I'm wondering if that is going to work. And, I can't decide between the pro or elite. phhhtttt... Need to choose soon though.

My last monitor was junk, an x2gen, but I got it semi calibrated visually. Samsung is a better monitor than the x2gen. I don't get it.

You could have received multiple recommendations for any budget within minutes by starting here. I'd advise you to return the Samsung monitor while you still can.

Really?? Really?? I have so little time to f around with shopping. So a calibrator will not calibrate my samsung? I've always fallen back on samsungs for years, but now they are no good?

Concerning photography, shopping/buying/compar​ing is way, way, way more difficult and time consuming than the actual learning of photography. God forbid one would have multiple jobs, sick family members, leaving little time to be a consumer. God forbid. Kill me; I give up.

The monitor you just purchased is excellent... for video gaming, email, office use, etc.

$249 will get you an excellent monitor suitable for photo editing and other graphics work. The 23" Dell U2311h.

You know what? Anyone in SE michigan want to buy all my **** for a dollar? I got 50D 70-200 IS , 50mm 1.4, 11-16 tokina, multiple flashes, tripods. Plenty of gear. I'm ****ing tired of this consumer bull**** and I'm done. Can't even buy a monitor that will calibrate. I'm ****ing done. PM me, 1 dollar gets all my ****. Preferably a student of photography or design, or something like minded.

I don't have time to wait for a monitor ship and local retail outlets don'e have the 23" Dell U2311h. It doesn't matter anyway, I give the **** up.

LoL on selling the stuff for a dollar. (if youre serious, I have two dollars and a nickel) I just bought the above mentioned monitor, U2311. It comes recommended a lot for a budget photo editing monitor. Where did you find these "make the black dots disappear" etc tests"

Will you ship it? I"ll pay!

Or, how about just using the Samsung to finish your urgent work, then take it back? (But my offer still stands.)

I'll add to the pile-on...Sasung in my experience just not suitable for a print-matching monitor, and the brightness problem is the big red flag to begin with. I've had a couple Samsungs in recent years that I've used as "second" monitors in a dual-monitor setup -- not only have I not done critical work on them, but they have both died on me and are now just taking up space until I recycle them!

OK, does anyone really NOT understand that the OP was only expressing his exasperation?

LoL Id hope most people realize it. I think people were hoping this was one of those situations where the person with more money than they know what to do with actually does sell their stuff for way way way too cheap.
