Not necessarily. The CF have used a few different versions over the years. We still have 8 of the original 'E' models kicking around. The 'H' models date to 1996 and the new 'J' models started arriving in 2010.

Since you live on the east coast, the plane could have been heading to Malta or it might have been on its return trip bringing back Canadians.

There's a paragraph midway through the article:

The prime minister also announced that a second C-17 aircraft has arrived in Malta, ready to help evacuate Canadians still stranded in Libya. Two C-130 Hercules aircraft will be sent to create “more flexible capacity,” Mr. Harper said.

and

A Canadian Forces C-17 aircraft evacuated 46 people including its diplomatic staff from Libya on Saturday.

It might have been one of Greenwood's Hercs on a training mission, or perhaps doing SAR duty in the Strait or Gulf. According to the DND website, they keep four at CFB Greenwood for SAR and other missions (humanitarian and army operations support).

It felt like it Dave! He was lined right up on the road I was on, near Debert airfield.

looks like one of the older C-130E models as the fuselage doesn't look stretched and she's got the old square paddle blades.

Oh, believe me the exhaust trails were clearly visible! That's why I stopped so quickly get that shot, it looked like it was coming down with engine trouble. But the trails were from all 4 engines, so not likely, I thought later. :)
