I downloaded the trial of Zenfolio, and played with it a bit. I don't like the fact that the images are resized depending on the size of the browser window. I feel when images are resized they loose sharpness. I also feel it's too cookie cutter.

Any other alternatives that are not too hard to setup?

I use smugmug and i like it. I started by just paying monthly (wanted to make sure I liked it). When it is time to renew ill be buying a yearly subscription.

First, regarding Zenfolio, there is a setting you can make which prevents images from being enlarged in the slideshow when the browser window is larger. If that is not what you mean, did you contact Zen about your problem to see if there is a solution? Their customer service is very good.

If you are still not happy with them, I would look at Exposure Manager.

The solution for the Slideshow option is:
Go to edit view.
On the right, go to the dropdown list where you can choose Visitor Preview, Slideshow, or Customize.
Choose customize.
Click on the Slideshow tab.
Choose page options.
Uncheck "scale images".

Thanks for the info, I will try it. I also don't like how it sizes portrait type images, they seem so small, I wouldn't mind for someone to scroll a bit and have an image 800px on the long side, but it seems to resize. I wonder if that can be fixed too. The album navigation seems squirrely.

For the portrait images, go to the right side panel in the edit view and choose what size display you would like: small, medium, large, extra large, or full resolution. I think the pixel dimension is different on the long side depending on whether it is a vertical or horizontal image.

It's not working or I can't figure it out. Basically, when I view an album, and then click on a thumbnail, the image opens. No matter if I select a view were only the image shows or the image shows and the remaining thumbnails are on the top or left, the portrait image is max 450 px tall. The original file is 1000 px tall, and I did set it to LARGE and XLARGE as stated above. Any way around this? I am on a 22" monitor too

As already mentioned, have you contacted Zenfolio about your issues? their customer service is pretty good, and might just have an answer for you.

I've been using SmugMug since 2005 and couldn't be happier.

www.photography-by-cat.com (external link) is a customized SmugMug page.

Yes but plenty of people use it for websites too. =) You don't have to have a blog. Really just check out that thread.

Be persistent in finding a solution with the provider of the service before you jump ship.
Might just involve a learning curve.

If you need to jump, I use SmugMug (2 years now) and am very pleased. VERY customizable.
