580exII and Flash battery pack settings

On the 580, Cfn 12, you can set it to "0" (flash recycles with flash battery and external power pack) or "1" (flash recycles with external power source only)

Which is the best/better setting choice when using a flash pack (Flash Zebra in my case). I shoot both in manual and Ettl mode.

That's really up to you. Using both will offer the fastest recycles. I usually have it set to only use the external pack. I usually don't need the fastest recycle. Also, it keeps the flash batteries fresh. I wouldn't want to have to change out the flash batteries before the battery pack.

Do you know the difference in recycle time between the 2 for your set up...curious

Take a look here to get the general idea. The Flash Zebra battery pack will probably give the same performance as the Canon CP-E4 although I can't say for sure since I haven't tested the Flash Zebra battery pack:
