So, I'm going to be taking a trip back home which will involve a 1 or 2 day trip over to South Louisiana (mainly coastal areas). Been trying to decide on a wide angle rental (my widest is my 24-70L). I was looking at renting a lens I wanted to get, which was going to be the 16-35L, but the price is a bit steep. My other considerations are:

Tokina 12-24 f/4(owned one in the past and it's a great lens)
Tokina 11-16 f/2.8
Canon 17-40 f/4

I'm thinking the 17-40 won't be wide enough. When I had the 12-24, I was sticking a lot to the 12mm side of things. But I'm considering all my options.

I'll be using a 40d and tripod with most of this.

out of your list the only one i'd look at would be the 11-16mm...but i'd probably go even wider than that...if you really want wide... go with an 8-16mm sigma

Obviously the 17-40 and 16-35 should not even be on the list.

I'd go with the 11-16, 10-20, or 10-22. And while you owned the 12-24 if you frequently felt you needed to go a lot wider than that, the 8-16.

Never felt the need to go wider then 12mm..

Why should I not include the L's in the list? If I were to leave a L out, it would be the 16-35. The 17-40 is in the general price range of the other lenses I'm considering.

I left the Canon 10-22 off the list for variable apature (and I could prob borrow this lens from a friend).

I don't think I've seen the Sigma 8-16 at the online rental places I've looked.

Since cost isn't really a point here due to the fact that I am renting. All the lenses I've listed come about the same price after shipping and insurance. But I am using the lens rental as a fell to if I want to buy said lens.

because you are on a crop...and there are better suited lenses designed specifically for crop cameras...like all the different 17-5X f2.8 with some sort of stabilization offered by the different makers

have you thought about a 15-85IS just as a do it all kinda lens?

Because you said when you owned the 12-24 you were "sticking a lot to the 12mm side of things."

And you already own a 24-70.

You would want to rent the 16-35 or 17-40 just to use the 16/17mm-23mm range?

It makes sense to me to rent an UWA, not the 16-35 or 17-40, which is only an UWA on a FF body.

You have already had what sounds like great success with the 12-24 and because you say you don't need anything wider the 12-24 sounds like the obvious choice to me.
