Hello I recently purchased a 580EX II I also bought a cowboy studio remote trigger system with shoot through umbrella. I'm new to flash and tryin to figure out how to best set up my flash on my XSI, I'm not sure if I shoukd set it up as a master or a slave etc. Any help would be great.

If you are firing the flash off camera with your wireless triggers, you do not want to set it for either master or slave. Just leave it set for normal flash mode.

Ok so it doesn't matter. Also it says it should fire faster then it is. My battery's are new in both units the flash and the receiver but it seems to go from about 2 sec to 10 seconds recharge in 15 shots. Does that have anything to do with the flash or is it the triggers? Thanks for the help.

Actually it does matter. Don't use master or slave mode with your wireless triggers.

And your recycle time is most likely the batteries being used. One way to improve the longevity of the batteries is to raise your ISO a bit. The triggers should not have any impact on flash battery life.

Here's a thread going thru lots of battery testing -

Just to be clear, if the flash is slow to recycle thats a battery issue with the flash. If the batteries in the trigger or reciever go low its usually indicated by misfires, or sometimes a reduction in the sync speed you can attain.

Thank you!
So what I'm understanding is regular brand new energizer batteries are junk. What does everyone use?

Your best option is to pick up a couple of sets of the low-self-self discharge NIMH rechargables. Sanyo Eneloops are the top of the heap but any of the precharged rechargable brands will do. Although honestly brand new energizers should do that trick as well.
