This area is between an existing boat dock and an industrial port. The old cables and ropes have long been abandoned. I came here for a sunrise shot, but bad weather and heavy cloud cover kept me from getting the shot I had in mind. I like this better anyway.

Three shots bracketed at 0, +1 1/3, -1 1/3. All shots were merged in Photomatix. I processed the image for the sky, water, and bridge, then saved that file. I reset the adjustments and processed it again for the rocks in the foreground, then saved that file.

I opened both HDR images in Photoshop and used a mask to blend them together. After that was done, I added the original 0 exposure image as a new layer and reduced the opacity to 20%, then saved the image.

I opened that file in Aperture and warmed up the white balance just a little. I increased red and yellow saturation to bring out the colors in the foreground, then desaturated the blues to tone down the sky and water.

I like the processing but would like to see the contrast bumped up just a bit.

It's too bad the rope isn't a bit sharper.

Great composition, Mark. This is a good example of how powerful a strong foreground can be. This looks like it was taken from the Port Allen side, right?

I agree the processing is nice (I like the slight pink in the sky).
I guess I am alone in not being keen on the composition - just don't like the fact that there is no transition between the foreground (textured beige rocks and rope) and the background (softer gray water, sky and bridge). The diagonal division seems to split the image.
