Here is a link that describes how these new tripods fit into the lineup. Basically the new 057 series supplements the 055 series and the new 290 series supplements the 190 series.

New pro models include the 057 Pro Tripod, which are heavy duty carbon fiber models available in 3 or 4 leg section models with max heights up to 80 inches and max load capacities on some models approaching 40 lbs.

Manfrotto says that the 290 Series will be more affordable due to the use of other materials, but will maintain the same quality standards found the in popular 190 Series.

I'm actually curious as to why they would push their 390 series as pro look-alike

Interesting how long it took them to realize that the spirit level on the top of the ball is actually useful as opposed to the bottom

468MG ballhead i owned had two spirit levels on top, it's several years old. I'v never seen a manfrotto ballhead with a spirit level at the base.

And unlike Markins their spirit level is visible when you have your camera mounted....Markins spirit level is completely useless.

Well depends on what you compare to, to gizto they certainly aren't.

The 057 3 section with geared columns will cost me around 480£ from the UK, which is of course a pile of money but again compared to a pair of other CF legs with a geared center column (not to many available) it's not that bad.

Hmm... in the USA they are $750-$900 which is definitely on the high end price wise for tripods. Of B&H's 227 tripods available, only 24 are over $749 and over.

It's certainly high end price, but how many CF tripods with a geared center column is there ?

So in comparison to other tripods with the same spec and feature set i don't think it's higher.

The Slik 924CF and the Manfrotto 057C4G are similar in spec, except for the $300 difference.

Well im not that fond of slik products, and i was referring to gitzo when i said same specs and i should have mentioned quality not only spec's on paper. Besides slik isn't even close to be as available to me as manfrotto nor is the service.

But yes there are cheaper alternatives both when it comes to price and quality, slik being one of them.
