Hey all --

So, my 30th birthday is coming up this weekend, and my bride-to-be wants to get me something nice, with the caveat that she's throwing a pretty decent party for me and already kind of spending alot of money.

Under normal circumstances, I'm unreasonably hard to buy for -- my problem is, if I find something I want/need, I take pride in being able to acquire it myself (and usually for much less than retail). That being said, I actually thought of something I would use - a Crumpler Industry Disgrace strap. I mentioned this in passing (without flat out saying I knew the type of strap, etc, that I wanted) and she seemed unwilling to buy me photo stuff because she would be afraid she would get me the wrong thing.

That being said, what kind of gifts are out there for aspiring photogs under $50? I've done some google searching, and while a canon lens mug would be cool and such, it seemed like most of the items were the same and weren't all that appealing (one thing I saw that contradicts this is some sort of a suction-style pod that adheres to just about anything, but I would be hesitant to put even my T1i on something like that).

Thoughts?

Maybe a set of Yongnuo RF-602 or RF-603 wireless flash triggers?

Some decent ideas so far, but something really intrigues me about the eneloops, that may be in the running. Thanks for the idea! :D

+1 to flash triggers if you have a flash, or the flash if you need one.

Bryan Peterson's "Understanding Exposure". It also comes as a Field Manual which I think is more useful. It's about the basics with great tips, and I take it with me on every trip, review it on the plane.

Some nice ideas, thanks folks!

One thing I'm seriously considering is a 2nd bag to carry less 'stuff' around in. Probably something like this -- http://www.bhphotovideo.com …_Messenger_Bag_Gray_.html (external link) , since if I take a real trip I probably wont bring all of the lenses in my sig (probably the 50mm and the 70-200)..

memory cards?

Got enough SD cards to shoot ~2500 raw images. On a casual walk about, I average about ~100 'keepers' (stuff that makes it to Photoshop at least)
