So in my research for my new camera body, It really seam that the Canon 60D and the Nikon D7000 are comparable. What I can't find is the actual Canon 60D photo quality. How does the Canon 60D do with decent glass, say a 17-40mm L lens?

Have you checked this thread? There's a good number of posts with different L lenses but yes there's too many posts in there. xd

The 17-40 is a great lens but to get the focal range of a wide angle you'll need something like a 10-22 on the 60D.

At first I thought that comparison may be a one-off. But both Amateur Photographer magazine and PhotoRadar (external link)in the UK have come up with similar conclusions.

On a 60D the 17-40 is more of a normal zoom, not wide angle. The 60D is capable of very high resolution photos with noise well under control. There is a lot you can do with that resolution if you shoot RAW. In general the 60D is an excellent camera that is right for an advance amateur or enthusiast or as a back-up for a pro, it can do pro level work and Canon considers it Pro-Grade even though they market as Enthusiast. If it's in your budget I have no issues telling you to just buy it and don't look back.

I have been using the Canon 60D with the 15-85 IS USM lens since the 60D arrived in early October. It is a spectacular combination. Up through ISO 1600 I can produce noiseless 12" x 18" prints in Photoshop CS5. In one print at ISO 200 and f/11, with zoom at 15mm, everything is sharp even in the extreme corners of the print. I'll try to send you a 100% blow-up of that tonight (no photos here at work). I have also used the lens with 60D very successfully at ISO 6400 for both theater photography and available light shots of candidates at political rallies; with a little noise removal in CS5 ACR, results are very good at 12"x18". In my opinion, it's a spectacular camera and lens combination.

I just got rid of my T1i and picked up a 60D the other day. What an improvement! I am amazed at all of the things you can do with the 60D. Iam using an EF S 55-250 and an EF S 18-55 and getting great shots. Mind you I'm no Ansel Adams.

Here are the images. For the record, I shoot RAW almost always and process in CS5. My love of photography is half shooting and half darkroom (now digital) to accentuate what I think is most important. First image is full image. Second is 100% of small patch in right corner. Image is of U of Toronto campus last November.
