I have found a number of online tutorials for making digital pics look better. But i am now looking for any books that show cool effects....not just filter effects but maybe like turning parts of black and white pics color and a plethora of ideas with step by step. anyone have any suggestions on books. thanks.

Martin Evening's Photoshop 7.0 For Photographers is great. It's huge, has loads of technical stuff and some for beginner to intermediate. I had to work at it, but have found it a useful book. Also, has a strong bias towards photography.

I have "Photoshop 7 Down & Dirty Tricks" by Scott Kelby (New Riders Publishing, ISBN 0-7357-1237-9). It gives step by step instructions to achieving tons of really cool, impressive effects. For an example, look at the title text graphic atop the guestbook on my main web site (external link); it's an effect - applied to simple black text - called "Mondo Cool Light Burst" in the above book, and is achieved in 10 simple stages.

I've gone through many Photoshop books, since starting with ver. 5, and while "specialized" books such as "Real World PS, Photoshop Artistry, etc. are exellent in their own rite, I've found none better, not only for effects, but for a general knowledge of the program, than "The Photoshop WOW Book/s by Linnea Dayton & Jack Davis!

They,ve been doing them for a long time, and they are thourough, very well organized and easy to understand.

Because Photoshop 7 is so similar to 6, they haven't
( To the best of my knowledge) done a PS 7 WOW Book; but though I have 7.1, I still bought the PS 6 WOW Book, and don't feel I've missed anything.

Hi all,
Actually they have now a "Adobe Photoshop 7 one-click Wow!" as I have it in my hot little hands. I haven't gotten into it yet but it is recommended by many. I got it from Amazon for $20.99. A book I got today, called "The Photoshop book for digital photographers" by Scott Kelby was recommended by almost everyone for useability and a quick glance says this will also be my favorite over my six other Photoshop 7 books. Got it at buy.com at the best price, I think about $24.99.
Regards
Norm

Another book to consider is the Photoshop Cookbook. THe author takes one picture and alters that picture with a variety of effects. Very well done and very instructional.

Another 2 of my favorite Photoshop books are:

(1) Photoshop Restoration & Retouching
by Katrin Eismann

(2) Photoshop Color Correction
by Michael Kieran
