I don't think I want to get into the mirror lens DreDaze, but thanks. I'm thinking about haunting local pawn shops to see if any telephotos come in.

well if you're trying to get 500mm for $250...i think your best bet is to put it on roulette, and hope you can hit red/black twice...you could look at a tamron 200-500mm, or sigma 170-500mm...but those aren't supposed to be that good...

Okay ... I'm reviving this old thread! ;)

Took delivery of this lens yesterday. Build quality is better than I expected.

Only had time to shoot out of a second story bedroom window, through the rain. This is 1300mm focal length, manual exposure, manual focus at about 100 meters distance. No crop here, just resized.

More to follow. :D

Again, about 100 meters away. 650mm focal length.

Not really. More like walking maybe 200-300 feet closer? Too lazy to do the math. For static objects I'd prefer walking toward it and using a better lens. .

If you don't live somewhere close to a 20-30 story skyscraper with an observation deck outside, can someone tell me how I could walk 200-300' closer to the moon? ;)

Years ago there was a thread on POTN about the 650-1300mm lens, and I have to say that the moon shots were of sufficient quality to take away the 'Coke bottle award for lenses'.

Phil Casciola (POTN shop dude) said, "I have to say, for $230, I'm impressed. I expected the web sized shots to be about as blurry as the 100% crop. I'm thinking for people on a budget that can't afford to spend $1500-5000 for a lens of this length, it's really not a bad starter lens." Later, "I think if you stack up some TCs on your 70-200 to get to 1000mm you will get far better results."

Thanks for the links. One of them I hadn't seen yet.

Taken tonight here in the city, sitting on a stack of tires in the garage (lights on) as a baby possum scurries about behind me, $7 tripod from Goodwill Store, Canon MkIIn, mirror lock enabled, shutter release cable.

Moon and Jupiter @ 650mm.

My best moon so far. 1300mm.

Last one of the morning. Was experimenting with exposure times here on M42 in Orion's Belt ... caught a meteor too!

Spent the afternoon shooting here and there, my first daytime experience with the lens. It's certainly not a $10k lens, the blue fringing is horrible, and the focus is razor thin. Yet, there was no way I was going to just walk up to this guy with my 135L and get this shot! More later.

700mm at @ 65 meters away, in the shade. He filled the frame.

Yes. It would be! Madonna is playing Chicago soon. Maybe I can make some quick $ for a 500L. :p

A few more from my first day using the lens. For long reach on a budget ... it's hard to beat.

Biffbradford:
Impressive.
I love you concepts and what you do with your equipment selection. I guess we must be family...
If you ever come to LA area, call me to have you as guest for one weekend and show a good spot with nice dark sky to take picture.
