I've seen this guy frequently but usually with his back to me. Finally got his profile!

Congrats! There are tough little buggers to shoot; they don't sit still long enough, usually :)

Good job! I've had one around all winter, quite unusual for our area, and they are indeed tough to get a decent shot of. I think one thing is that their feather pattern is so muted that it is difficult to get good definition if the light is not just right.
Al

BTW, would that be a Virginia Creeper?

Congrats, too! And it looks great. I just came in from my yard, chasing one. And, nothing good. It landed 3 ft from me, laughed at me and flew off.

Thank you. I got very lucky today, not only did I catch him in the right light but I had the right lens on my body for once (400/5.6). ;)

Thank you. Very true on the muted colors, on some of the trees here I can't even spot them when their back is towards me.

I suppose he is a Virginia creeper, I'm about thirty miles west of Richmond.

Thank you Sharon. They are tough to spot but from what I understand their range is over the entire continental US and up to the southern part of Alaska.

Great catch and a wonderful shot of him too. I've only seen a handful of these little guys.

Nice shot! Also, thank you for the I.D. as I have seen this bird several times at a local park but have not been able to shoot in good light.

Ha I finally have a gear list!
Canon 60D, 18-135, 50 1.8, 55-250,
Canon Rebel XS 18-55. Some flashes and filters and a tripod with a bag to put it all in!

Thanks. We have quite a few and I've been chasing a good shot of one for a long time.

Thanks. They are pesky, very hard to catch. It will probably be many moons before I'm able to get another good shot of one.
