70-200mm 2.8 IS MK II tripod ring. To remove or not remove when walking around...

I was curious when walking around with your 70-200mm 2.8 lens, do you take the tripod ring off, flip it up out of the way, or do you leave it on? I seem to have a habit of resting it with the palm of hand hand to help stabilize my shots, but it does get in the way when zooming in or out.

It is a personal preference. With mine, I remove the ring and only use it when I use a tripod. I rarely use a tripod so it is off most of the time.

Here is a poll I conducted on the subject: https://photography-on-the.net …p?t=678057&highlight=ring

This is a bit of an aside, but amusing.

I owned the f/4 non-IS version before upgrading. I didn't realize the 2.8 Mk II's ring doesn't flip open like a handcuff, but instead is merely loosened and slipped off after aligning with a designated mark.

I felt stupid for owning the lens for several weeks only to find I initially couldn't remove the ring because I expected it to operate like the f/4's ring. Yes, I had to actually look at the user's manual.

I have mostly left my ring on, as you might have guessed by now. :p

I used to just leave it in the normal position and let the ring rest in my hand when in use... But now I remove it unless I will be using the lens on a tripod or something.

Turn the foot of the ring up when you want to handhold the lens. Easy to hold and makes a small handle for carrying the lens, almost. Only reason to remove it is to save overall weight. But, then you'll forget to have it with you perhaps. How often do you use it? If hardly ever, take it off.

I use the foot of the collar for a palm rest like with a competition rifle.

I shoot tripod mounted most of the time so the tripod ring is on the lens almost all the time. If I take the camera/lens off the tripod to shoot handheld, I rotate the mounting base and lens plate over the top of the lens which is the most comfortable position for me.

Simple, if you don't use that lens on a tripod ever, remove it, put it away in the closet. If you do use the lens on a tripod, leave it on, so when you need it, its available & ready.......and if it's sometimes you use it, sometimes you don't, then leave it in your most used camera bag

I never remove the collar ring from the lens when walking around. In fact I do not remove the tripod from the ring either. It is so much faster seeing the action just put the whole thing on the graund and take the shoot, instead of trying to decide: Do I need the collar on the lens for this shot or not.
If you got some equipment; in this case the collar ring use it ! Otherwise it becames a useless thing!

Does anyone use it for attaching Black Rapid. Is it designed to hold weight of the lens and the camera upside down?

I attach my Black Rapid RS4 to the tripod ring all the time. No problems yet and it has a lot of mileage.

I remove mine. Have not had it on since day 1. it's a little bit lighter, but more importantly, it's not in the way of my zooming.
