Hey guys, when you sell a used item, is it commonplace/necessary to include the original purchase receipt?

i sell a ton of used gear and never supply a receipt, the gear is what it is, buyers only seem to care about price and date code

it's nobody's business what you paid for a lens, where it was bought or how long you owned it as long as it works and is in good condition

Steven, No, wait until you have your computer to test the PSU if you can.

You can jump a PSU to start, but... I wouldn't do it with only fans connected though, it won't provide enough of a load and that's not good for a PSU.

Ah, ok. I didn't think of this, but it makes sense. So that means a copy of the receipt is fine too, right? Doesn't have to be the exact original receipt/invoice?

I'd say its fine :)

I hang onto a lot of stuff for a very long time though lol, I still have the purchase receipt for my Powermac G5 Dual 2ghz...I keep it as a funny anecdote..

Though not as funny as a few receipts my parents have saved, I remember we came across one for a 6.4gb Western Digital HDD we purchased...for the low low price of $400-someodd....

and my mom's Datsun which she paid $1800-something for in the 70s

I haven't sold camera stuff, but with all the computer stuff I've sold, I've never included a receipt or been asked for a receipt.

But... I guess it makes sense why some people would want one. I can't imagine why you would need the original copy, a copy should be fine.

Yeah, I think, like Steven said, they would want it mostly if it was still under warranty.

The only thing I've sold before (aside from garage sales) was my Rebel XT, which I sold in person to a friend, so obviously the original receipt was not needed.

I like your answer, Martin. It's the simplest. :)

I guess I won't bring it up, but if I am asked for a receipt I can provide a copy of the order confirmation.

I usually keep receipts for a while too, but after some time I may toss them out. In the past I had printed my order confirmations from online purchases and put those together with the invoices sent in the packages. They're in a folder somewhere, which I haven't organized or taken out since I moved. For a few years now, though, I've printed to Pdf instead of paper, so that saves a lot of clutter and doesn't take much HDD space.

ahh really? I am paranoid that the PSU might have some defect and might fry the board or something..that's why I want to test it out first before I connect all the expensive stuff hehe

so bad idea? ok will wait until tomorrow then :DThanks Nick

Why do you think the PSU might have a defect?

The thing is, even without a full load, you wouldn't be able to properly test the PSU.

same here, I don't supply receipt specially if the item is already out of warranty... but for those that I sold with warranty I always include the original receipt. I usually put them in the box anyway hehe

and most of the time I let them come here at the store, it eliminates the hesitation or paranoia of the the buyer

a lot of times, buyer don't even test the unit anymore haha

maybe like there might be some sort of grounded connections or what...I just want it to run just in case hehe

I'd be glad if I end up with a buyer who is local pick up and cash payment, hehe.

Alex when i post stuff, i give very few details and i don't go out of my way to accommodate a buyer,

the more you offer the more they take advantage and the more they ask and the less they offer.

post up pics, post the date code, find a high and low price and find a price your comfortable with in the middle, priced high takes longer,

lower it sells faster. sell it to an impulse buyer rather than someone you hold hands with,

your not making friends your selling a lens. your probably best off selling it on a local craigslist ;)
