Ok Steven. Test between you and Martin.

What's an ECT, what does it do, how do you test it, what kind of readings should you see throughout it's normal operating range? And what would happen if it failed?

is it that chip that tells the engine what to do?

what would happen ig it fails is irregular everything... and ohh if you drive an Automatic, then irregular shifting will occur I guess :lol:

I have no idea

read my post above yours Martin

I am not doubting your knowledge on mechanical parts at all.... its the modern stuff that I am worried hahaha

i've wired up computers to run modern engines in hotrods and i've use fuel injection on big block chevys

plugging in a diagnostic computer to get a code to fix something does not appear to be that hard to me

i'm just not interested in working on modern vehicles to learn them, my biggest problem is i'm broken :p

Wow guys. An ECT is an Engine Coolant Temperature sensor. You guys are thinking an electronically controlled transmission

try it Martin, I am sure its pretty easy

assembling it isn.t the problem, the tricky stuff is optimizing it, i could probably get it running

being a geek doesn't interest me, having a computer tuned to perfection does :p

its nice if you assemble it yourself so you could tinker with it if something goes wrong..as for optimizing I have to agree... I myself am doubtful I will ever push this rig, I might burn my $1500 investment haha

Still there. Still have to fix them. Thermostats haven't changed at all. But the computer has to know what the engine temperature is. Carbs are a thing of the past.

does the ECT enrich the engine if the temp climbs ?

Well the computer richens the mix when the engine temp is cold, then brings it back to stoichiometric when it warms up. Once the O2 sensor goes into closed loop the computer uses it for fuel trim and just monitors the ECT. Uses it more for fan control.
