Huey Lewis in Concert [Large Images Warning]

I shot Huey Lewis on the fifteenth at the Chumash Casino Resort. Utterly superb show! They are so down to earth and earthly, too! Masterful lighting. There is a four foot high speaker box that sits on the floor below and in front of the stage at audience level at one side (and a matching one on the other side) on which I normally set my Pelican case with everything I need except tripod and 300mm f2.8. I noticed glow tape on it but didn't give it a thought and set my stuff on it. About 20 minutes into the show, just as I was about to pack up, Huey sings he way over, steps on the speaker and I can see the amazement in his face that there's "stuff" right where he is supposed to stand! I am overwhelmed as he stands right over me looking confused ... I pull my stuff off as fast as I can but by then he's given up and headed back to center stage! No one told me he was going to come where I always have my equipment. I felt like an idiot!

Wow, they have gotten old! I think the last time i saw pics of those guys was in the mid 80's

Yeah I remember them back int he 80's. Are they still Hewy Lewis and the News or is is just him?

Great pictures, Dwight. Wish we could get this kind of lighting in our small venues. We just turned over the file for a promo poster I did for a friend's band last night. I've got another one to work on this week. Curtis N. would have loved to have this kind of exposure opportunites when we shot the performances. You do marvelous work.

man.. I wish I could go to half of these concerts!! with or without the camera!!

Angus, yes, for photography, the lighting makes the venue! And while I am absolutely positive that you would get images as good as or better than mine, I was amazed to see some of the images that were taken and printed for a nearby newspaper's entertainment section of the James Brown concert ... they were TERRIBLE! So there is still some talent required. I have started making contacts with local papers offering to provide images free. So far, I have the largest paper in the county, Santa Barbara News-Press as a regular. Since part of my agreement with the casino is to support PR activities, I don't charge the paper. There is another guy who does the same, charging the bands and giving free images to the paper, for the big Santa Barbara city venues, Dave Bazemore ... I haven't met him but he seems to do fairly good work.

Johnny, Nidz, WOW is right. Almost every act I have photographed looks like the fathers (or grandfathers) of the groups I remember [I'm 60]! Some of them need chairs and some hobble. But most have simply gotten better in the process.

Lee, I certainly understand that! I'm not really much of a music person and generally have to do a lot of asking and web browsing to learn about these acts ... I hardly ever know which ones do which songs ... my wife is always saying, "What do you mean you don't know who Steve Winwood is??? Are you some sort of idiot??? Don't you remember his songs, "XXX", and "YYY" and "ZZZ"? Usually I don't remember! But, all my co-workers and friends are envious. And at $125 for an average front row ticket (which is where I usually am) I don't know many who could afford it.

Great shots Dwight, but I cant imagine anything less!

I'm fairly out of touch with music, there are a few bands that I know, and know quite well, my wife on the other hand knowns far too much (espcially when it comes to Jimmy Buffet, who, btw, has his own Cult Following, and I mean religious cult, worshippers and all)

Rene, I understand ... I do shoot at two other, less expansive, venues. But here I can shoot everything from 16mm to 600mm depending on where I setup! I had a quadruple coronary bypass last December and still ask my wife about once a week, "Honey, did I die on the operating table and this is really heaven?" I dont' expect (or care) to make heaven, mind you, but if I did, this would be it!

Nice shots as usual Dwight But a question to boot. Where did you meter off of the Guitarist shot?, The forth shot I believe. His face is perfectly lit and the light right near his head is also.

Dwight is up to his usual excellent work! I really like the shots where the lights have a Tyndall effect - that is, what light does when shining through a colloidal suspension (haze). brings me back memories of high school physics classes.
