Keiffer, I spot metered on his face, but even that isn't as good as it might be ... but I bracket +/- 2/3 stops (and intend to do five steps rather than three when I get a chance to hook the camera up to my computer which is what you have to do to set the number of steps) which helps a lot.

Bottom, they make ample use of fog machines for almost all the performances, although Steve Miller had a lingering cold and they cut it way back ... thos pictures are in the pipeline. I very much the effect, too.

Thank you, Gavin ... the box with my underwear was literally at the bottom of the pile ... I had put it out where it got moved first and consequently everything else went on top when they unloaded.

Croasdail, Thank you. Yes, I kept taking breaks and logging on! We are still unpacking the essentials, reorganizing spaces, getting the bicycles into the garage (big thunder/lightning storm last night), etc. It will be a couple of weeks before we are settled. Then I have to build shelves in the garage and we will be replacing some of the furniture that the cat (now killing rats in a barn on a farm) we used to have shredded. So, a lot to do, but a lot of opportunities, too.

Aw, Metal, c'mon, Dude, if you had my lighting you wouldn't be developing all those low-light skills and artistic techniques and you'd have the same mindless crapshoot images I'm always showing ... where's the Art in that?

Quasiphoto ... me, too ... although I can only do a very few ... Eric and Angus here in Urban and Gavin and Kenny in Sports and Frank and Charles in Glamour. This is not to say that I don't always look when I see you or several others have posted, but I do "go looking" for these guys. I am currently looking for some input on creating a studio over in Lighting: https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=101352

Nice shots, very nice! Although I do have one little 'pet peeve' and that is concerning shots with the mic in the way. Maybe it's a personal thing and not a big deal to others but here are a couple of examples without the mic in the way:

One exception (and there are others of course) is a harp player:

At any rate, thanks for posting these excellent images of a Huey Lewis performance. Hey, he looks good - rehab works!
Best wishes,
BT

Buddy, 'pet peeve' and 'preference' aren't the same. I think we'd all prefer that the singers weren't sucking on the mic's 100% of the time, but that's what many do. Also, sometimes the looks and feel of the overall shot in which the singer happens to have the mic in a bad position makes that the selection. As it happens, I have some excellent images of a harpist without the mic in the way, but of course he wasn't playing at that instant! :-) Anyway, getting the singer without a mic in restricted time and place isn't a choice, it's luck.

Wow, gorgeous photos! I particularly like #4 with the guy holding the guitar. The way the lighting peeks out and the pose is just awesome.

Okay Dwight... question time. Where do you shoot from. A few weeks ago I went to a blues festival and took some shots. The good thing is I am getting a lot more couragous working my way into locations where I can get shots... and most people are very understanding. Since I didn't have credentials, I was down in the first row shooting up... a lot of the shots turn out better then I thought they would... but still had issues with the monitors. The guys and gals with credentials all had to shoot from the sides of the stage, sometimes hanging off the lighting scafold like monkeys. Looking at the sight lines... I wonder how their shots turned out. Where are you shooting from on these shots? sides, front? Cheers.

Oh... on the lighting thing.... would love to hear your thoughts. I pretty much am going to follow Gavin's advice and use the ABs.. but still debating between the 800's and 400's. My main thing is sports, so flash duration is key. The 800's if you turn them down... actually have the duration get longer. So I am wondering if more 400s is better then a couple of 800s for the same lighting level. Then agian, I may be sweating over nothing, maybe the 800s will be still fast enough turned down.. and they are only very marginally more expensive. Anyway... love to see what direction your heading too.... I will update the other thread when I have a decision. Still checking with my gyms if they will alow them. Cheers again.

Often the major talent has slightly differing rules, but usually I can do what I want so long as I don't get between the audience and the talent too much, of course, the big egos have 'first x songs only' limits. I was allowed to shoot Huey for the first three songs so I started in a seat in the front row, moved to the left and right of the stage, and then moved to the back toward the back of the room.

I would certainly follow Gavin's advice as well as spending as much as I could! :-)
