What is the best settings to use? Will be my first time attempting this on a cruise. I dont want to freeze the cars but give the look of moving (background and wheel). I assume it will be hit or miss due to so many varying things going on. Thanks...

Depends. I would personally start somewhere around 1/100s and change to taste.

I have heard that a shutter speed of 1/vechicle speed (in MPH) is a good starting point and then work your way down from there.

theres alot of trial and error.
I tend to do speeads of 1/40 to 1/60, also we are usually on a large highway or backroads.
the slower the speed of the cars, the slower the shutter speed you'll use.
Oh and both cars need to be travelling the same speed, the issue with a cruise atmosphere is people tend to speed past the camera as if it'll show they're fast. When in reality it ruins a shot.

I usually set the camera into a shutter priority mode. If you're rolling 20mph set the camera to 1/20th of a sec, 30mph = 1/30th

Here's an example of rolling 20mph @ 1/20th

Trial and error works best. I generally use 1/30 but just look at the view finder and speed it up and slow it down to get the amount of blur your are looking for. Make sure to bring your cpl filter with you

Thanks... here was my first stab at it.. Found myself taking them around 1/60 or so. The cars were moving fast so that didnt help.

i personally prefer less sky and more road in my shots, but each person composes differently,
They do seem alittle out of focus but that steadiness will come with practice. I do alot of mine at 1/60 as wel by the way

this is what i mean by more road, less sky
(for the record, this picture of mine was really bad and I attempted to save it but im not too happy with it

How do you not get blur at 1/20?

It should work better? The relative speeds between the cars should be zero?

only the nsx shot has a good angle, the rest of them are quite boring..
I've done it in the past laying in the back of my 4runner with the hatch open while doing 25-30mph and once you start shooting like crazy you will get 3-4 good/sharp shots out of a hundred or so.

there one from that attempt (not the most flattering angle i know :))

Faster in as faster then us so thus the relative speed of zero is non existant.... We were doing around 80 and being passed as if standing still lol so I had to pan quite abit.
