If it's a rangefinder, you're not looking through the lens (as you are with an SLR camera) when you look through the viewfinder.

Trying to take a picture with the lens cap on and shooting a Leica. Its either a film rangefinder or he is a complete idiot. If its a film Leica I can see why he doesn't know the lens cap is still on because there is no LCD in the back to view the pictures, but if it is a newer model like an M8 or M9 he would just see black in the LCD, lol.
