Assumed it was my lack of talent, I tried for five months to get the hang of it. I took it to the Canon repair center on Wednesday, picked it up on Friday, shot it all day today, it's now everything I hoped it would be.

I highly encourage anyone who is disappointed with this lens to get it repaired!

Oh, I may be joining you. I am really really really tired of the CA on mine. Had assumed it was me, but now I don't want to use it unless there is zero chance of anything bright in the photo.

Can you tell me, specifically, what made you finally decide it was crap?

Front or backfocus issue, when you use MF it's perfectly fine.

Strangely enough it was getting my 70-200; it took great pictures on day one, just drove home what an L lens should do.

It did both front and back focus depending on the focal length and seemed to have "dead spots" that moved around depending on focal length. It is now dead on sharp across the entire frame and at all focal lengths and apertures, even 2.8.

Seconded.

Focus in mine was hit or miss. I tried for a couple of months to overcome what I thought was lack of talent also.

Sent it to Canon they replaced defective parts (Chassis and PWA).

Came back sharp.

Did you have it micro-calibrated?

Post some pics of 100% crops if you don't mind.

I'll second that - PIX!!!

For info - PWA? Googled, but the only photographic abbreviation I can find is Pano Wide Angle. No big deal, just nosey / curious.

I rented the 24-105 F4 a few weeks ago, and it was soft. I wasn't impressed at all. Could have been a bad lens.

Thank you. bw!

My experience with 24-70L:
1) MA on zooms is a waste of time. You can't nail it across FL range.
2) Posting here is not going to fix the issue, you need to contact Canon
3) Canon fixes this for free if under warranty or for a very reasonable price if out, may take a couple of trips if problem is not trivial. Don't give up if it's not fixed first time, be persistent. Consecutive trips are on Canon, they provide shipping label.
4) Most importantly, be specific as possible with the problem description, sample pictures can help too, just burn some on CD and ship with the lens
5) Canon adjusts lenses to "standard" camera body, so if yours is off, you will see the problem even after calibration. Send the body along if any doubts.

Actually I meant PWA: Printed Wiring Assembly

To me, PCB is a Printed Circuit Board: Raw Board without components installed.

Or at least it does to me and the industry I work in.

;)
