I did weddings the last two weeks.

My set up the first week
5d mark II + tamron 28-75 2.8 + 50 1.8 70-200 2.8 IS II (Rented)
(backup shooter)

My set up for the 2nd week
5d mark II + canon 24-70 2.8 (I used it the whole wedding) the ceremony + reception were in he same room
(backup shooter)

My new setup with my wife being the 2nd shooter( for next month-til feb of 2011) Pending 5d mark mark III release

Me: 5d mark II + 70-200 2.8 IS during ceremony and using the 24-70 2.8 during the reception.

My wife: Canon 40D (coming this Wednesday) + 24-70 2.8 during ceremony and during the reception I will give her the 50 1.8 to go around shooting candids.

Both of us will have speed lights. I will let her use my 430ex II until I get another one, while I used the 580ex II

How does this plan sound. btw next year if all goes right I will get the 5d mark III + 70-200 2.8 IS II.

I'd upgrade the 50 when you get a chance but it sounds like a good set-up!

I agree, and invest in a second 580 flash.

Think you will at some point need a wider lens, your other range is covered.
You also have your Bodies and flash covered, nothing wrong with the 40D for a backup until like you say upgrade to 5Dmk3 and then use the Mk2 for backup.

Make sure you also have the following covered also

Batteries?
Memory?
Battery Grip?
Tripod + head?
relectors?
Step ladders?
Good bag to allow easy access to all your kit

I have batteries and a grip on my 5d mark II. I have a tripod + head and ordered a reflector a few mins ago

Cool,
You will at some point come across a wedding with 200+ group shot.
So think about a wider lens and a cheap set of step ladders at some point. But for now it looks like your all set. :-)

will do thanks for all the information btw I don't think I will use the 5d mark II as a backup next year I wanted to sell my 70-200 2.8 IS to get a 70-200 2.8 IS II when I buy the 5d mark III bundle/rebate thing canon does every year in feb/march! 17-40 is cheap :D or 16-35 II :(

This is huge. Some of my best investments have been bags and cases.

IMO you're putting money in places it doesn't need to go in. You're trying to spend a lot of money that it doesn't seem you make yet. Why upgrade perfectly good gear? The 40D is a great camera. The 70-200 I is a great lens. I think it would be wiser to use your money to fill out your gear line-up a bit more and concentrate on advertising.

I get enough advertising on facebook/word of mouth. I work for the government in the morning and ups @ night, so I have decent amount of funds coming in. I'm happy with the 40D as a backup I will just switch out my 5d mark II for the 5d mark III

Another question. I played around with the canon 85 1.2 and I'm thinking about getting the sigma 85 1.4. How good sigma work with my 24-70?

Friend of mine has the 24-70 and has just purchased the sigma 85 1.4 from the recent International Focus On Imaging show here in the UK
He is blown away with the speed and accuracy of this lens, It is a very highly rated lens.
He has not not been out and done much test shots as yet but as soon as he does I will post a link to them.

Sorry I have nothing more concrete to offer.
